Diplomatic Corps

All diplomatic representatives in the host state form the Diplomatic Corps. Diplomatic corps in the strict sense are the heads of the embassies and missions accredited in that State. In ancient and medieval times, embassies were only temporary and targeted. From the middle of the XV century the Institute of Permanent Embassies began to form. Under modern conditions, bilateral diplomacy is conducted mainly through diplomatic missions or through special missions. The exchange of diplomatic missions can take place at different levels. The Vienna Convention of 1961 divides heads of mission into three classes: (a) ambassadors and nuncios (the so-called Vatican representatives) accredited to heads of state; (b) ambassadors, ministers and interns accredited to heads of state; and (c) business executives accredited to foreign ministers. The class to which the heads of diplomatic missions should belong is determined by agreement between States. No distinction is made between heads of mission because they belong to their own class, except in terms of seniority. The structure of diplomatic missions varies from State to State and is determined by their own traditions and the specific nature of their relations with the host States. However, embassies usually have the following departments: political, economic, bilateral relations, press, cultural relations, consular and military attachés and an office.
