Khujand
Khujand is a city in northern Tajikistan, the administrative centre of the Sughd Oblast region. It lies in the picturesque valley of the Syrdarya River at an altitude of over three hundred meters above sea level. Today, the city is the largest industrial, cultural and commercial center of Northern Tajikistan and the second most important city in the Republic with 181,600 inhabitants (2019). Representatives of more than 20 nations and nationalities live here.
Today, the city is an important transportation hub, a political, economic, cultural and scientific center of the country. There is an airport and a railway station in Khujand, which is located 11 km from the center of the city in the settlement of Gafurov.
Since the city became part of the Russian Empire, it was called Khojent until 1936. The city was then renamed Leninabad after Lenin on 10 January 1936. And after the independence of the country the city got its historical name back already on February 26, 1991 and was officially renamed Khujand.
