Turkmenistan Tour – in the land of golden sand, fast horses and fine carpets. The first scientific discoveries about human settlements in the countries of today’s Turkmenistan date back to the Neolithic Age. The development of agriculture led to the emergence of the first settlements in the Bronze Age. The most famous of these settlements are Namazgah-Tepe, Altyn-Tepe, Kara-Tepe and others. From the IVth to the VIth century the territories of ancient Turkmenistan often went from hand to hand, first they were conquered by the Akamenids, then they became prey of Alexander the Great and passed to his successors. Later, during the reign of King Mithridates II, the lands became part of the Parthian kingdom, which quickly took a leading position in the Old East and became one of the strongest states. At that time, the capital of the kingdom – Merv (today’s Mary) – was transformed into an important commercial, political, cultural and scientific centre, thanks to its advantageous location on one of the busiest routes of the Great Silk Road. Three important sites of historical and architectural importance – Kunya Urgench, Merv and Nisa – have been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Each of them is of great cultural and scientific value, and all of them have long since become popular places for foreign visitors, who will also experience them on this Turkmenistan Tour. Another promising area of cooperation with UNESCO is the spiritual heritage of the Turkmen people. The UNESCO Convention for the Protection of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which Turkmenistan ratified in 2011, is a working tool in this direction. Within the framework of this Convention, the epic art of the Turkmen people “Gorogly” was included in the “Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” in 2015, the Turkmen national art of song and dance “Kushtdepdi” in 2017 and the traditional Turkmen art of carpet making in 2019.
